Welcome to the Blair Lab in the Department of Biology at Franklin & Marshall College. Our research focuses on the evolutionary biology of eukaryotes, specifically the fungal-like Oomycetes. These organisms are ubiquitous in nature, occupying niches in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Many species are saprotrophic, playing a crucial role in nutrient cycling. Other species are devastating pathogens, such as the causal agent of potato late blight, Phytophthora infestans, and Pythium insidiosum, which causes pythiosis disease in animals and humans.

We use a combination of field sampling, molecular sequence analysis, and comparative genomics to study the evolution of this important group. Check out the Research page for a description of our current projects. Also read about our students and lab alumni. Research opportunities always exist for new students, so please contact Prof. Blair to learn more!
